Live Music Direct Review - 23 February 2006

"Denied Sons of Iglesias get bonus points for the great name. Not that they need bonus points. Given that they've already been picked up on by, for example, Radio 1's Session in Scotland, it's clear that there's something special here.

That something comes in a form of drving melodic rock reminiscent of noted influence, Queens of the Stone Age, particularly in some of the guitar work - the kind of filthy noise Josh Homme would like. This, though, is not merely the style of copyists, it's a sound which they've worked with, writing it into their own thing. And they do it well.

They play together with practiced ease, and there seems to be a gelling, a communication on stage. Vocals are shared, keeping the band fresh from song to song as they switch between the two guitarists. There's a group responsibility here and it's quite exciting to see how that pulls the band together as they play.

The songs have that kind of head-nodding energentic thrust which is great to see and which, in another band, might come with a kind of sneering arrogance. Here it's more a willingness to show off what they, by right, should be proud of. There's a reason this band have started gaining attention, and it probably has much to do with their ability to write great rock tunes.

Compared to Mummy Short Arms (and the other band tonight, Dirge, whose mate Sparky dances through their fun set like a pissed genius), it's an entirely more reserved performance. For that, though, it's no less powerful in its delivery. In a way, it's a shame that they've been put on last in the bill, as, almost inevitable in shows like this, a portion of the audience has left. Those who've left miss a good set. Those who stay are treated with cds the band give out at the end. I'd be surprised if they haven't all been played by now. "
